SCBWI conference question
« on: October 19, 2012, 09:50 AM »
I'm planning to go to the NY conference in Feb. (Yay!) and I'm just starting to look at flights. Which airport do you think would be the best?

 :thankyou

I recommend you call the hotel where you are staying and ask them. They may even have a free shuttle....

LaGuardia is closest to the city. JFK is further out. Newark is in NJ.

My first choice would always be LaGuardia to come into the city, but I know a lot of people prefer JFK. Don't know anyone that likes Newark, unless they are in NJ or going there, but maybe others will chime in for reasons why that airport is better. Sometimes JFK is much cheaper to fly in/out of, and sometimes LaGuardia is. That would be the biggest factor for me.

I don't think any NYC hotel has shuttle service from the airports. But it never hurts to call and ask.

I've always flown in to LaGuardia. And the shuttle to the city is usually about $17.00 from the airport. So reasonable! Taxi's are double that.

Enjoy the conference!

You can take public transporation from Newark to Penn Station NY (33rd street/7-8th Aves) and flights can be cheaper.

I think Liberty will be cheaper. The train right from Newark airport is $12.50 and is a half hour to 33rd Street (Penn). A subway up would be the next step. I happen to like Liberty a lot. It has much improved over the years.

I've heard the shuttle from LaGuardia is unreliable but I could be wrong.

The worst choice is JFK because it is a real haul into NYC.

I used to take the train/subway into NYC, and it was cheap!  Haven't done it in a long time, but it took me right into the heart of the city and I walked to my hotel.

I'm going to second Newark - it's often cheaper for me and I actually think riding the train to Penn Station, etc., is fun.

What may work best, though, is just to ask for (enter into the computer) all 3 big NYMetro airports and choose based on cost and the flight timing that works best for you. There are so few flights from anywhere very far away anymore that sometimes only 1 will work regardless.

I usually fly to Kennedy (it's less crowded) and the bus to the city is about $15. It drops you off right around the corner from the hotel. Make sure you make your hotel reservations early. Don't wait.
