Thanks all. JFriday, I don't know if I should be embarrassed about so many rejections, but I think it's always better to go down swinging. One thing I didn't mention is that it wasn't all different agents -- many rejected me several times for several projects. The irony is that the agent who probably rejected me the most times -- four -- is the one I chose when that last R&R turned into an offer.
