Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities UPDATE: YABC award!
« on: October 06, 2012, 08:00 PM »
Just returned from seeing Captain Stupendous! Mike Jung’s launch party at Mrs. Dalloway in Berkeley for his debut MG, Girls Geeks and Secret Identities, was the place to be.
Mike was funny and awesome. The lines to have him sign books were tremendous, the food was scrumptious, and there were at least ten BB I recognized and more than twice as many real live kids, the real audience. And the other Captain Stupendous, Arthur A. Levine, was there too
{If my family wasn’t waiting for me at our Sukkah Party I’d have even braved the mile-long lines to say Hello  :embarrassed2}
 :partytime
 Good show and huge congratulations to the BB’s Mike Jung.

Hey Mirka, I'm sorry I didn't get to see you there! It WAS kind of a madhouse, wasn't it?

The launch party was very, very fun. I was surprised at how nervous I was - I'm always nervous before those things, but I can usually convert the nervous energy into something more useful, and I had trouble doing that yesterday. But it was great to see so many people there, including a high school friend who flew in from New York to surprise me! I got to meet some people for the first time, I got to see a bunch of friends that I don't see very often, Mrs. Dalloway's got to sell a pile of books, and I didn't burst into flames from fatigue at any point. I'm very grateful to everyone who helped make it happen by showing up, buying my book, and cheering me on from a distance!

It was terrific!  (But Mirka, I'm sorry I didn't get to talk to you.  I got unaccountably shy during the mingling bit and went and hid in the children's book section.  "hid" being relative, because of the blue hair.)

Mike, you did a fabulous job.  Your daughter was a star!  And you get five million bonus points for singing and playing the ukulele.  And your song was (1) actually very pretty and (2) a hoot!  In fact, that would be the moment when many people might get MORE nervous, but you really seemed to relax into the singing.  And how absolutely lovely that Mr. Levine was there to cheer for you!

PLUS I think your signature doodle is a winner, and I love love love my Captain Stupendous Fan Club Badge.  :yay

I definitely *saw* you, Anne. Hooray for the Blue hair.
We'll say Hello at the SCBWI in Oakland, October 20 where Mike is presenting next. I will not present, but will be signing my book, and will get to watch Mike's presentation and the long lines that will form to have his book signed over there. Mike- you were made for this. You are so in the right profession/vocation.

At the risk of stepping on toes (like, um, Mike, did you want to post this first????), because I thought this was fantastic -- I mean, clearly Mike has lots of talent, but singing? Who knew?) -- I am going to share this. Because, really, he just nails it. Writing a book, sales, agony, Star Wars. But also, the freakin' ukelele.

GEEKS, GIRLS, AND SECRET IDENTITIES just got a silver medal from the Parents' Choice Awards, hooray! I don't expect my book to win many awards, and as a parent myself it's kinda fabulous to know it's getting positive attention from parenting organizations. http://www.parents-choice.org/award.cfm?thePage=books&p_code=p_boo&c_code=c_fic&orderby=award
