I read so many great books published in 2012. I think my picks will be:

The One and Only Ivan
See You at Harry's
The Cabinet of Earths

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for at least one science fiction/fantasy book on the list!

I read KATERINA'S WISH. Wow, what a lovely story with a rich 1900 Colorado Coal Camp setting. I would be happy for that one to get a nod, too!

I adore MAY B. too, and would love to hear its name during the awards announcements!

Several of the buzzed-about books I haven't read yet, but it's hard to imagine anything beating IVAN.

I don't think anyone has mentioned BOMB yet. I'd say that's a contender for an honor.

There's also talk of Cynthia Levinson's WE'VE GOT A JOB: THE 1963 BIRMINGHAM CHILDREN'S MARCH, which, like BOMB, is non-fiction. I love the attention that non-fiction has been getting of late.

Also loved ONE FOR THE MURPHYS, KATERINA'S WISH, and I'm about 2/3 of the way through WONDER, which I'm loving so far. Haven't read the other contenders yet--IVAN is literally on my night stand waiting for me to finish WONDER...

I've seen BOMB on the top of lists for both the Newbery and the Printz. I'd be shocked if it didn't win something, although I haven't read it.

So glad Spendors and Glooms was an honor book, and Code Name Verity. Loved both of those.

I'm thrilled that THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN got the Newbery. Totally deserving. And I also love that THIS IS NOT MY HAT got the Caldecott - I'd be knocked out by that book on a purely visual level, but it also has terrific interplay between the art and text. Does anyone know if an illustrator (or author/illustrator) has ever won a Caldecott Honor and the Caldecott medal in the same year before? It was kind of mind-boggling to see that happen! I was also very happy that Raina Telgemeier's DRAMA got a Stonewall Honor Award.

I was stunned that neither WONDER nor THE FAULT IN OUR STARS were recognized beyond the Odyssey Award that was given to TFIOS.

Thrilled about THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN and CODE NAME VERITY. Two of my favorite books of the year.

Agree with Mike's shock on WONDER and TFIOS.

As for Caldecott, I personally preferred EXTRA YARN over THIS IS NOT MY HAT, but all goes to the same great illustrator, so there's that. But I was pulling for GREEN.

Fun morning for sure. Great day for books. So many new titles I want to read!!!

I was thrilled when IVAN was announced! Lovely, lovely writing and a touching story.

Like Mike and Kelly, I was shocked over the shut-out of WONDER and THE FAULT IN OUR STARS (though admittedly more so over TFIOS).

This year proves that when it comes to awards, heavy buzz/popularity does not equal a shoe-in, and that's as it should be.

All in all, I'm very happy with the results, and echo a lot of the thoughts here.

LOVE Ivan. Very deserving winner. And I'm so glad Splendors and Glooms got an honor. That's the book I'd have been *most* disappointed to see get nothing. But there were so many strong MGs this year. I'm both pumped and feeling so very aware of how high the bar is.

Also surprised by no mention for Wonder and TFIOS, especially the latter. I'd've thought Wonder was a shoo-in for Schneider, if nothing else.

A fun surprise is that Gary Schmidt was mentioned -- not for What Came From the Stars, but for writing the PB whose illustrator won the Belpre.

I am also very glad that these awards aren't about popularity. I know we sometimes moan about award-winners not being kids' favorites, but I wouldn't change the fact that these awards are about quality, as best we can measure it.

Finally, what is it with ALL the titles this year that end with the word "stars"?

Lucky for me, happened to have Ivan out from the library. Read it this morning. A lovely book! It has a plot, a sympathetic character, and hope. Also, I think it's a book that will actually appeal to the target audience (sometimes they do not). Great choice!

I don't know why so many books have the word "stars" in the title....but me, I'm going to try to work the word IVAN into the title of my MG WIP.

So fun to watch and listen this AM!
Very surprised WONDER didn't get a Schneider nod.
So excited to see BOMB win three awards!
Glad TFIOS got noticed for something.
And ARISTOTLE AND DANTE I haven't read, but that got three nods too.
The HAT books crack me up, and IVAN definitely appeals to the target audience, which makes me happy.

I thought there were good choices -- a few surprises and new titles, but I think IVAN is a worthy winner. One thing I love is that Katherine Applegate has been a commercial series writer for so long, then she was honored for a gorgeous standalone MG book! It's really inspirational to see a writer who changes direction and finds such success. In this business, it's hard to break out of pigeon holes.

So many books I haven't read yet! (I need to read IVAN!) And I'm especially happy for CODE NAME VERITY, SPLENDORS & GLOOMS, SERAPHINA for winning the Morris award, and for Tamora Pierce winning the Margaret A. Edwards award!
I'm actually even more surprised that TFIOS wasn't recognized for the Schneider (sp?) Family Award for portrayal of characters with a disability. (I haven't read the YA book that was, though)
