Author Topic: Newbery/Caldecott early ideas (Read 1560 times)

Once again, I'll be making a presentation in very early November on the Newbery and Caldecott frontrunners. I have my own list, but I'd like to hear yours -- maybe something I have missed.

Because this is an extensive project I undertake every year, please make sure the books you love are eligible for the awards this coming January. Not that I don't love a good book, but I have to focus on the books who have a chance to win.

At this point, I'm still rooting for Wonder, though I know it has it's critics.
I haven't found a Caldecott I'm committed to.

Would be interested in what you think.

I'm cheering for The Lions of Little Rock. Also loved See You at Harry's and Summer of the Gypsy Moths.

I just read and loved THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN by Katherine Applegate. So far, that's my pick.

I was completely gobsmacked by Kate Milford's THE BROKEN LANDS - it's a flipping masterpiece.

I think KATERINA'S WISH by Jeannie Mobley is a possible dark horse contender. It's a debut that's quietly gathered starred reviews but I haven't seen it discussed anywhere in the blogosphere (similar to MOON OVER MANIFEST, I dare say). Full disclosure, the author is a friend of mine, but I genuinely think this is a well-written story with important and inspirational themes, but also a sweetness and sense of fun (magic) that will appeal to child readers. It's historical fiction set in early 1900s Colorado coal mines. I think the story can resonate with children today who have parents struggling to make ends meet or working dead-end jobs and give them a sense of empowerment or hope that they can not only dream a bigger future for themselves but act on it as well.

I also think LIAR & SPY by Rebecca Stead is a contender, as well as WONDER as others have mentioned.

We really love If All the Animals Came Inside by Eric Pinder!

Collage illustrations can often look flat, but Marc Brown’s jump right off the page. I saw the cover when it came out and placed an order that same day.

Can’t think of another one I’d nominate for the Caldecott Medal at this moment, but I’ve been picking up a lot of older titles this year.

So far, my top pick is Wonder. It has its detractors, and I see their point, but I loved it. Liar & Spy is awesome, too, though the consensus is that it's not as stellar as When You Reach Me.

My vote is for Wonder too... (I didn't realize it had detractors. I'll have to see what the criticisms were because I thought it was amazing.)

Newberry: The One and Only Ivan or Wonder. I read Liar & Spy but didn't think it was as good as When you reach Me.

Love all these. But have any others read Summer and Bird, by K. Catmull? It's out tomorrow -- I snagged an ARC. I think it's a contender. Magical realism, deeply literary, and unique.

Sheila O'Connor also has another book coming out soon - Keeping Safe the Stars. I haven't read it yet, but it's compiling stars (er, review stars). Sparrow Road was so wonderful, I'm sure it will not disappoint.

I also want the scoop on Wonder.

I hadn't read the One and Only Ivan until yesterday and was blown away by it. As much as I love Wonder, my pick would now be Ivan.

Wonder has many things going for it and many fans, but it felt too drawn out to me and too smiley-face happy at the end. It just didn't convince me that this was how things really would have gone for these characters. But it's getting people thinking and talking, which are good things for a book to do.

I liked Summer on the Moon by Adrian Fogelin. Anyone else read that?

Agreed that KATERINA'S WISH is a definite dark horse contender. Full disclosure--the author is a friend, but KATERINA has earned three starred reviews so far, and it's only been out just over a month.

My TBA list is teetering, but I'm most looking forward to reading IVAN based on what others are saying.

I just finished THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN and that's now leapt to the top of my list. WOW, that's a great story. That's my new pick for the winner.

I also read THE GREAT UNEXPECTED by Sharon Creech. I really liked it and think it will be batted around as a contender, but it wouldn't be my personal pick this year.

I'm a big fan of THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN.

I have mixed feelings about WONDER. In the end I didn't find it convincing. I guess that's because I'd read AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF A FACE by Lucy Grealy, which is a nonfiction of account of somebody (also strong and spunky) who had to deal with the same issue. Kids are cruel, people are cruel, and there are no easy solutions. BUT good for the author for at least making kids think.

I just read KATERINA'S WISH. The book has some fantastic secondary characters. I enjoyed it and I liked that it didn't have a perfect happy ending. Some of the situations and character reactions were a little unbelievable for historical fiction, but that's probably just me being nit-picky. It's a very enjoyable read.

I actually haven't read a whole lot of middle-grade this year, but one that I read and liked a lot is called CROW by Barbara Wright. I interviewed the author on the blog, From the Mixed-Up Files, but I haven't seen many reviews of CROW, so I'm thinking a lot of folks missed this wonderful book. It seems like the kind of novel librarians would like too.

I also loved SEE YOU AT HARRY'S and THE MARBLE QUEEN and would be thrilled to seem them both get recognized.
