MS Word on Macs?
« on: September 27, 2012, 08:25 PM »
Hi everyone, there is another thread on this board that mentions in passing that MS Word is seamless when going from a Mac to a PC, but then on Twitter, I often see people complaining about Word on Mac. Mostly what I see are complaints about transferring files from Scrivner to Word and that it's glitchy, but if I don't use Scrivner, do I have anything to worry about?

Thanks in advance, this is the only thing holding me back from getting Mac since Word is so widely used in our industry.

I don't have any problem with it.  Never have.

Me either. (At least, no more problems that most MS products have generally, but there's hardly any escaping them.)

I would guess the Twittered problems are probably in Scrivener, not Word for Mac per se. Word is bunches of versions down the road, whereas I think Scrivener's just on 2.0.

I find that Word 2011 (2010 on PC) is much more stable and usable than Word 2007. Word isn't perfect--but it crashes equally on both machines. And the Scrivener issue is more of a Scrivener thing than a Word thing. And it can be resolved by exporting files as RTFs and pasting them into Word.

I switched to a Mac five years ago and have used Word all that time (and for years previously on a PC).  I've never had one problem with it, but I have never used Scrivener so I can't address that issue.

Don't use Scrivener (yet) but haven't experienced problems with Word on my Mac, and my version of Word is pretty old (so is my laptop.)

I've also had no problems using Word for Mac, either transferring files with a PC or converting from Scrivener. I think if you're using a relatively new Mac and the most recent versions of both programs, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Go for it!
