Flashlight / PB Query letter
« on: September 05, 2012, 11:56 AM »
I'm thinking of submitting a MS to Flashlight. I've read their website, studied their catalog, and think my book is a good fit in terms of content, style, format, and so on. BUT I'm struggling a bit with the query letter - I'm so used to just doing a short cover letter and submitting the full MS. Any tips / suggestions? Thank you!

Perhaps you should trust someone who has SUCCESSFULLY queried them, but when I have queried Flashlight, I typically used a slightly longer query that included a little bit of the text in the query pitch.

My regular PB queries are super short -- I believe (with no evidence other than what I would do) that most editors/agents pretty much skim a PB query and just read the manuscript.

It sounds like you've done your research and you're off to a good start with knowing why your story is a good fit for them. Next step is learning the standard query format. A good starting point would be to look up Nathan Bransford and Kristin Nelson's query tips, along with other sources you respect. Then if you feel comfortable posting your query, I'm sure a few bb'ers will offer advice and suggestions to help you polish it.

Thank you! That really helps :) I am glad to know the query letter can be a bit longer than my usual short cover letter, and I'll check out those resources.
