Anne - LOL It has been a pretty darn good year! So glad I got to share a debut year with you...

LTMAadison Hmm. Well, LT, they paid me for the essay a while back, both with money and a bunch of contributor's copies. I also signed a contract giving them rights to re-use the essay in other anthologies and on "future merchandise" without further compensation. So, are you saying I shouldn't have signed that? That's entirely possible - but you should know the original anthology wasn't the first appearance of this essay in the world! It came out in a magazine prior to the Chicken Soup. So the "first rights" were long gone...

Anyway, I think it's pretty cool, and I have an agent who vets all my contracts now. Still - I'd do it again, no question.  Sorry about your experience. Of course, if they tried to offer you NO money for your work, the answer is no.
Also, I would be extremely curious to know if other soup lines are printing essays on the labels? I would think Chicken Soup would be one of the very few players in that game!

Seems like you've got your ducks in order -- didn't mean to rain on your parade. It's just that does get my dander up when i see these books on the best seller lists and know they're nickel and diming the writers.

Get as much publicity (write press releases, etc.) as you can for it and maybe you can get more work for actualy $$.

In the meantime, I think it's pretty cool that your story is on the "flagship can" as you husband says.  I think it says a lot about the quality of your story.  It will definitely get read and your name will get known.  It'll make you stand out as a writer.  I think it's a great situation to be in.   Congratulations!   :cheerleader  I can't wait to find the soup!
