Unfair reviews
« on: August 18, 2012, 08:36 PM »
Lately, there's been a rash of comments on some of those review sites where the information is just plain WRONG!  I usually don't even read those sites, but I happened to see the first few sentences of a review of one of my books on Google.

I work really hard researching my books, and I'm sure there are some mistakes.  But this isn't one of them.

 :protest:

Someone was upset because corn is a new world grain and obviously Ceres couldn't have been the Roman goddess of "corn"  (THE AUTUMN EQUINOX).

Well, in the US, the word corn refers to maize. However, corn is also a generic term for grain.

Sorry, I just had to let off steam. I can't tell her this, so I'm telling you.

 :ranting:

Feel free to join the pity party.  Have any reviewers gotten the facts wrong in any of your books?

Haven't been burned like that for anything I've written, but--

Once I was opening in a show, and the fellow playing opposite me forget a line. Since his line was a total change of subject, there was no way my character could say it for him, or even give him any hints. An excruciating pause ensued. Finally I was able to figure out how to skip ten or a dozen lines without messing up the logic of the scene, and I picked up the dialogue at that point.

Well, one of the reviews mentioned the dropped line, and blamed me. I couldn't correct the reviewer without being unkind to my fellow actor (and of course one is supposed to rise above reviews), but how annoying that the reviewer assumed it was I who dropped the line.   :taz:

Oh good, I love cupcakes.

Susan--How annoying! I guess I never thought about theater reviews, but you deserved a bonus for saving the scene.

One blogger who reviewed Me & Jack said the author needed to do her research better because, according to the blogger, pizza delivery didn't exist in the 1970s.

I seem to remember she liked the book, though, so I'm okay with it! Didn't feel the need to correct her.

Remember the movie line, "I see dead people everywhere."  Just change it to "I see ignorant people everywhere."

I knew corn was maize in the US in elementary school and was something else in Europe.
I lived in a dorm in the '70 where there was not dinner served on Sunday evenings, not only was pizza delivered, but Tacos, McDonalds, and any other fast food that relied on a college campus that the majority of students did not have access to cars.  It wasn't like today where kids can drive their cars, have refrigs and microwaves in their rooms along with computers, TV, etc.
As for reviewers of plays, music, etc. they seldom know a thing about what they are reviewing.  Anyone reviewing a play, should have a copy of the play.  I went to a concert of a pianist once and the reviewer tore him apart because he had the audacity to wear an African Print shirt and did not stay for the entire concert.  He did not see the number of young people lined up to get the pianist CD and autograph.  I might add I tore the reviewer apart in a letter to the editor along with several other people.

Have your pity party, but remember there are Ignorant people writing reviews everywhere.  Most of them are found out eventually.

I'm with Liz. It reminds me of Josh Billings' quip, "It ain't ignorance causes so much trouble; it's folks knowing so much that ain't so."  I figure most petty ignorant reviews like those will either be shown to be wrong, or are just too insignificant to matter to anyone. Even so, :grouphug2

Wow, Betsy, you are not having a good week. I am so sorry.

I think a lot of times reviewers feel the need to point out a flaw. Sometimes it's to make themselves feel superior. Sometimes it's because (as somebody I know believed) they genuinely think that a review must include both positives and negatives. There are lots of reviewers out there and not all of them are as thoughtful and well-informed as the best ones are.

And here's my ticket for admission to your pity party: several years ago the series editor of a nonfiction book I wrote made me make some changes that I strongly disagreed with, but was given no choice about. Guess what the reviewer found fault with? Grrr.

When I was in college (a large land grant school) a writer for the student paper did an extensive review of a classical music concert based on the program. Unfortunately for the reviewer, who was either not really in attendance or inattentive, there was a last minute program change and the original pieces were not performed. The resulting letters to the editor were withering.

I sometimes wonder what happened to the writer -- perhaps got into the memoir business.

Well IMHO the worst reviews are the ones that don't even say anything about the book/product and just complain about the service...such as one star reviews for something that arrived damaged. I don't get why those are not taken down.

Thanks, Susan.  That helps a lot!!

rab--GRrr!  That happened to me once too--many years ago. Too many little blows to the ego this week.  Thanks for noticing.  I should be used to it by now.

Love the quote, Leslie.

I'm so sorry about the unfair review, Ellen.  That really stinks.

And I agree totally with Susan. You're such a terrific writer.  :hearts

This is such a hard thing to deal with! I just read a blog post by Julie Cross about this very thing and she actually addressed the comments in her blog. Very interesting. You can check it out here: http://juliecross.blogspot.com/2012/08/opposites-attract-episode-1.html

It's this new world of internet that we live with where people can just post without thinking about what they are saying or what they are doing to authors who are real people.

It's so frustrating when reviewers get stuff wrong. But I think we need to resist the temptation to respond. But venting here? That's what forums like this are for, right?

FWIW I saw the dude from Goodreads speak at a conference this summer (I know you might not be talking about Goodreads...) Anyway, he was talking about how they hold author-members to a higher standard than other members and how one should never respond to bad reviews, even if they had factual errors.

His example was: Your title is The Highland Scottish Man and there's a kilt on the cover and the word Scotland plastered in a huge font and Scotland is mentioned on every fourth page in your book... And the reviewer says, "The research for this book sucked. I could tell the writer has never even been to Ireland."

His advice. Ignore it. Others will too. Easier said than done sometimes, though.
