Can't unhighlight blocks of text
« on: August 04, 2012, 06:57 PM »
Situation: ms. with large blocks of highlighting in many places (to indicate new copy). File has gone from Office for Mac 2004 to (probably) Windows Office and back, and now
I can't delete the highlighting!

I've copied the whole thing to TextEdit and it looks as if the highlighting has disappeared, but when I copy it back to Word, there it is in all its radiant beauty.

I've tried the usual un-highlighting method (select copy, click on None), tried it holding down Option and the ⌘ key...

Any ideas other than pasting the document to TextEdit w/o formatting? I'm not thrilled about having to format the whole thing again...

ETA: I'm cutting the highlighted blocks, pasting them into TextEdit, and then pasting them back into the Word file. The highlights disappear.

You can't just rehighlight and choose no color?

You could try to save the file as another format, like rtf. Open that new file and save it back as a Word file again.

Robin: I could highlight and change the color, but selecting "None" had no effect whatsoever.

David: I tried that, but the highlights came back when I copied the .rtf file back into a blank Word file. However, when I pasted the offending portion into a TextEdit format and then dragged it back into the original Word file, the highlights stayed gone. After a good night's sleep, I'm wondering if I could have dragged the whole thing instead of inserting {scratches head} but it took less than an hour to fix and I found a typo and fixed a couple of vague phrases, so maybe it was meant to be.

FYI: the original piece was written in Scrivener but the new material was inserted and highlighted on a Word .doc after I'd compiled and exported. Scriv was up-to-date but Word was Office 2004 for Mac, so maybe something in that process made it go all twitchy.
