Online revision course with input?
« on: August 04, 2012, 04:58 AM »
Does anyone know of an online revision course? As in, a course where you're taught revision techniques while going through a work of your own, and preferably also submitting small pieces to be looked at by an instructor/teacher?

Thanks!

We have one at the Loft (where I work) taught by a former editor, but it's not offered in the near future...

Kurtis, I actually already tried to email you but I guess it didn't get through? I did look at the course list and couldn't see a revision-specific one. Please keep me updated when the next one becomes available as I'm pretty sure I'll have something else to revise or will want to revise this one again!

Thanks, Karen. I'll try that website.

I also found this http://www.creative-writing-now.com/self-editing.html It's not focused on kidlit but the teacher seems well qualified.

I'll let you know how it goes whenever I sign up for something!

I took Holly's course. It's a Revise Your Novel in Seven Days workshop, based on editorial revision suggestions. I didn't have editorial suggestions, but took the course anyway. I liked the speedy-part. It made me think of the big picture, which I think is important.

Darcy Pattison does live workshops and has a book called Novel Metamorphois, Uncommon Ways to Revise, which I have also found helpful in revisions, but that's obviously not online.

Reisions!

Franzilla, I did get your email and hadn't responded yet -- and wasn't sure you were the same person (your email didn't come from "Franzilla"). I was thinking, funny, I just got an email like this... heh. Glad your critique went well.

Savvyauthors.com has a lot of different courses and they're very reasonably priced.

ICL offers a book course where you draft a new novel, outline, synopsis, all that good stuff, plus one revision. I loved it and learned a lot. It is self-paced and you do have to begin with a new book, but this might be something to consider for the future. I don't think it's open to people who've taken the magazine course though ... but you could always contact them and ask.

Disclaimer: I teach the magazine course.

Here's the link: http://www.institutechildrenslit.com/

Oh, I remember that Carolyn Coman, along with another novelist was offering a revision workshop via the Highlights Foundation. You must already have a full ms ready before you apply.

My critique group once stopped our weekly submissions to do whole-book critiques. We did one book a month. It was rather awesome.
