I am researching ideas for a NF story that answers strange and weird questions that kids (8 to 10 year olds)may have about animals. Such as "Do bees have kness?" That sort of questions.

Has anyone been asked a question like this before by a child?

Thanks
Sharon

My daughters wanted to know what animal produced egg nog.  Their ages were five and seven years old. For quite a while they believed  that it was a reindeer-like creature from Lapland. I know...I couldn't help myself. They still laugh about it, and they still enjoy drinking  egg nog.

For what it's worth, my cousin once asked if a dog's tongue was made out of ham.

Sorry for this, but a real question from a real kid: is milk cow pee?

I was asked the same question yesterday, Kurtis! (I work at an urban farm.) : )

I was also asked once if a child could touch the goat's "handles" (aka horns).

How about this....my youngest would ask, "Do bugs have antlers?"

My daughters asked how a chicken lays chicken meat.  I got a couple of roosters off of craigslist and showed them.  Then for my youngest, I wrote a picture book called "Where Does Meat Come From?"
I've been asked if honey is bee vomit (it is not - the proventriculus is not a stomach), and if skunks think they stink.

My 7 year old asked yesterday if ants have eyes. I think lots of kids (and me too!) wonder how insects walk up walls and on ceilings.

How do armadillos get in their shells?

How long is a frog's tongue?

I love this thread, and can't think of a single thing right now that my kids asked, but they love animals and have had curious questions over the years.

Can you ride a seahorse? Do parrotfish say, Pretty Polly? Can you use a sand dollar in a store? (My kids haven't asked me any of those, but they're questions I'd like answered!!!)

When I told my daughter that any animal that's furry is a mammal, she said, "So a caterpillar is a mammal?"

My kids have always seemed to wonder about all forms of worms -- do they have teeth? If not, how do they eat stuff? Also, which is the front end of a worm? How do they know which way is up?

(Naturally, they probably asked these questions in more adorable, quirky fashions but I can't remember. Four kids in five years, you forget a lot of stuff!)

 :thankyou

Yes these are exactly the type of questions I am looking for.
I think this is going to be a really fun WIP.

This is a fun thread. I laughed at so many of them. I really hope that when I am finished with it the editor that I send it to laughs to.

Thanks again. And keep them coming!

Maybe my favorite question ever, from the seven-year-old son of a friend: 'Can bugs see germs?'

Me: "What's the difference between Ducks and Geese?"

My long-suffering sister: "Um... they are different animals?"

(Sadly, I was an adult at the time. LOL)

Are Pandas bears?

How come they say Pandas and Polar Bears are mean when they look so cute?

I once heard a seven-year-old ask a zookeeper for permission to climb the giraffe.
