I like the puzzle idea, Christine. It fits with the overall plot of the mc figuring out how to put all the pieces together to break the curse. Her life depends on it.

If these items represent a sacrifice that was never made - you might have them be items that would be a sacrifice for her to lose. Things that are precious to her.
