So I've put this off for weeks now but I MUST dive in and ask the question.

So I have names of people to design them, and I have suggestions about how to design them myself, and I have suggestions of who to get to print them, who's good, who's cheap, blah blah blah.

But I don't know about the art.  Do you ask your editor to send high-quality art?  What do you ask for?  Do you ask your illustrator?  Do illustrators prefer to design these things themselves?  Do you go halfsies?

I'm sure I'll have more questions but that's a starting point.

And what if my publisher is doing them?  I know they don't often do them, but some do.  Any ideas about asking politely?  :)

I just sent my bookmark designer the file of my cover and and text, and she did the rest...but that was for a YA.  A bookmark for a PB will probably want more...I'd call your editor and ask all these questions--from if they're willing to do the design (or even kick in with the printing) to sending you files of art for you to give your designer.

Others might have a different experience, but here's mine:

I asked my publisher for permission to use to use the cover artwork on my bookmarks. I was told yes, as long as I credited the artist. I designed the bookmarks myself and paid for them myself, but I love them--bookmarks are the best business card a writer could have. I do know some writers have asked and received the money from the publisher to do this, but my agent didn't think it was a good idea for me to ask.

Mike and Anne Marie,

I just snapped a pic of my bookmark for The Summer of Moonlight Secrets, front and back, so you could see how I took the cover art and used it in designing the bookmark. I used GotPrint and asked for gloss and UV protection both sides. I think that coating has a nice tactile feeling and brings out the color in the art. Brandon Dorman was the illustrator for this pic, and, obviously, you can't go wrong with such a beautiful illustration.

My own thoughts were to dedicate one side to cover, and even though the whole cover won't fit, you can focus on the part that delivers the most impact. The back carries a full image of the cover (small), excerpts from reviews, the covers and review snippets for my other books, and my web address.

I took the pic with my iPhone and didn't know how to post it here, so it's on my Facebook page if you want to take a look: http://www.facebook.com/danettehaworth

Um... let's see if I can remember how this worked. This was for a novel, not a pb, so there wasn't a third person (the artist) to consult, which I'm sure makes everything simpler! I had large .pdfs of my cover art, but it wasn't high-rez enough (or in the right format or something) for my designer, so I put her in touch with my editor/AD, and let HER make the request. Bonus: they got back to her a lot faster, too. :) They also included the logos for the publishing house, which they like to have included (and which I think is just a smart thing to have on there, anyway; see Literaticat's recent blog post about featuring your ISBN and publisher on your website). My publisher also likes to have approval of the final design, so the designer worked that out with them, as well.

Like Danette mentioned, I have had luck getting the cost of promotional materials reimbursed by my publisher--so I definitely think it's worth asking! (Interestingly enough, my agent actually made the request for me.) So you just never know.

Very often the publisher will make these FOR you too -- I would simply... you know. Ask.  Straightforwardness rarely fails to get an answer of some kind.

Something like this:

"I love the bookmarks that some authors have made up, and was thinking of potentially getting some printed, but I don't want to duplicate efforts. Are you guys planning to print bookmarks, and if so, can I have a few hundred to give away at events and school visits and the like?

If you are not planning to have them made, I can do it fairly easily I believe, if you send me any hi-res files of the book jacket and any publisher logo you'd like me to include.  And how shall I credit the artist/designer? And would you consider chipping in toward the cost as it is a marketing tool?  Thanks so much!"

If it encourages you at all -- please know that bookmarks are NOT expensive. If they are having them done, it really is not a big deal to give you a few hundred. If they are NOT having them done, it is really no big deal to ask them for some dough.  They may or may not give it to you - but you aren't asking for the moon. There is no way they'll think your being weird or a diva or anything else.

(And if you are too freaked out, have your agent ask. Casually, of course -- no biggie either way -- but why should you do it if they are already planning to do it?)   :flowers2

FYI, at the bookstore we have them done by Overnight Prints. High-quality, two-sided, full color costs below - add a few cents for rounded corners and spot gloss. They look fantastic.

Literaticat, do you *recommend* making bookmarks? And if so, what do you recommend doing with them? I seem to remember hearing a bookseller say they get tons of them and have to toss them out.

Most of the authors at VABook had them to hand out to kids at the Sweet Reads event.  And I have a specific fun plan for them as well.  I have definitely heard booksellers toss them.

We definitely toss ones that are ugly, or where we didn't even get the book in, etc.

Should EVERYONE make them? Nope. But if you do a lot of school events, book fairs and the like, they are nice to hand to kids -- particularly if there is an area of space where you can sign it. Lots of kids want autographs. If you go sign stock at a store, it's nice to stick one in each copy. If there are local stores or schools where people are big supporters of your book, it is nice to give them a little pile.

But randomly giving stacks to bookstores who don't even carry your book is probably not too useful, no. And if you don't interact with schools or the public much, I don't see the point.

Thanks so much, all, and esp. Lit, who gave me words, which I didn't copy verbatim, but gave me the structure to give me confidence. :)

I am generally fairly extroverted but this book promotion stuff is sending me a-tizzy.

My publisher is going to send me high-res images, so now I just need to go back to all my other research and figure out what to do next.

And, YES to the autographing! Kids love it! Someone came to read to my 1st grader's class last week (a parent or relative, which they have every week) and she came home with *his* autograph! I have no idea why, but she thought it was really, really cool. Imagine how she'd feel if a real author did that?  :)

Ditto on the bookmarks for autographs.  I recently went to watch Jennifer A. Nielsen at a school visit, and I stayed and chatted with her while she signed autographs.  Those kids who didn't buy a copy of the book tore scraps of paper, pulled out old math assignments, asked her to sign their clothing/watch wristbands, and anything else they could find.  A stack of bookmarks would have been quite handy then.

Oh, and Jenna, I believe it!  At the above-mentioned school visit, one boy even came up and asked ME to sign his book.  When I told him I was nobody, he didn't believe me at first, and it took some persuading to get him to stop asking me for my autograph in Jen's book.

Elissa, that is too funny! I remembered that last year or the year before, DH took the two bigger kids to see our local HS's production of Bye, Bye, Birdie. DD had the lead actor sign her program! And she still has it in her "box of special things" and she's now 10....

Sorry for the hijack!

From a business perspective, we always love getting bookmarks. Not only do we use them at the store, but we also give them as little extras to our librarian clientele to give out at their schools.

Post cards? Nope. They go right in the trash, along with the others we get daily.

keep writing,

Getting a good designer, that wont charge you an arm and a leg, can be difficult. I use to work for a (mostly small business) printing company.  Sometimes people would have designers already, and others would ask us to design for them. There were also a select few who did everything themselves and often did so in Word. It is somewhat difficult (but by no means impossible) to print from Word. I personally find Word overly difficult to work with, and this is from a person who use to do this for a living.

I wouldn't recommend working in Word. It is very difficult to adjust items in Word, so you'd want it perfect before you gave it to a printer (or you might get charged for some design time). Indesign is the easiest to use, but is very expensive. Corel is a bit cheaper, but is still several hundred dollars. For all of these programs (including Word) you would have to learn how to use them.

I would recommend using the designer at the printing place where you are getting your postcards/bookmarks done. You should look for a printer that does mainly digital work. Minutmanpress is a franchise that I'd recommend (not just because I use to work there, but also because I like their practices). You will get a better discount if you do everything in one place. The better idea you have about how you want something to look, the less time it will take to design. The lower the design time ---> the cheaper the design. Bookmarks and postcards shouldn't take too long to design. Usually under an hour, so you'd have to pay around maybe $55 for the design. If you get more than one design done at once, and want similar designs for everything, then it doesn't take much more time to design the other items.

The more you figure out before you go in, the better. Many designers will let you stand there and help design your layout, but just be aware that this could lead to more time being added to your design. This isn't always a same day process, so sometimes the print company will work through email to get your feedback on the design. Your designer/printer should be polite. If you have a problem with your designer just know that the design created belongs to you (unless otherwise stated in your contract). If you do switch companies you can ask for the design. It may take some work to get this design, but most designers will (reluctantly) give you the originals. Do a bit of research before you go to any designer/printer. It will save you in the long run.

Ack, sorry for the massive post!

FYI...I recently ordered bookmarks from Overnight Prints after seeing literaticat recommend them. Unfortunately my experience with them was not so positive. Out of the 500 bookmarks I ordered, I'd say maybe half were cut correctly. Some of them were cut so badly off-center, part of the bookmark next to it showed up. I've contacted them to see what they have to say about this. Needless to say, I am very disappointed (but certainly don't blaim you literaticat!  ;)).

So I had Overnight Prints redo my order and I received my new bookmarks the other day. Much better job done this time. I wish the first order had been like this. There was no extra cost on my part, but it was a bit of a hassle to contact them and request a new order. Now I have to send back the old cards too...again, at no extra cost to me, but still have to print out the return label and get it to a UPS drop-box. Luckily I ordered the bookmarks with enough time before my release that I had the good ones in time.

I told my publisher I was going to a conference and asked permission to use the cover art work on bookmarks, and to my surprise, they designed and printed bookmarks for me.

So, for me, the slightly passive-aggressive ask worked. :)

After a positive conversation that made me feel comfortable asking, I recently asked my publisher for a relatively small amount of money for this kind of thing, and was told it wasn't in the budget.  For the record, this is a huge publisher and a small amount of money (less than $100).  I can't imagine that they couldn't spend this small amount of money if they felt it was a good way to spend it.  Obviously, they don't.  The money may be small potatoes to them, but even then, I guess they didn't think they'd see a return on the investment.

So I am not surprised or bummed or or mad or anything like that; but it made me think.  I decided that if they don't think this publicity item is worth the investment, why should *I* use any of my money?  I don't have a bottomless publicity budget either.  In fact, I have many bills to pay to use my advance for, mostly not book-related, and I've already spent about $1000 of my advance on publicity.  So I am not going to do it.

I wish these questions had more definite answers.  I hate this crap shoot stuff.

I wondered about bookmarks also, and almost ordered some. Maybe it was serendipity, but the site mentioned at the beginning of this thread was way too buggy for me to manage.
Then a very experienced writer (multi-published) told me not to spend a  :dollar on bookmarks. If my publisher had printed them, I'd have gladly taken them. But as they didn't, it got me thinking.
I asked friends and a few bookstore clerks, who had the same opinion of the Anon post just before me here^.

I guess that if you plan many school visits it is nice to have something to give away. If it means printing them on your own dime, it would depend on how many dimes you have.

All right, I broke down. One week after I posted this^.
With all the bookmarks talk and with (now three) 'Author Events' coming up, (they were theoretical before, now they're scheduled) I felt I should have *something* to give away. It also helped that NextDayFlyers was easy to use and design something with their website tools for a non-techie like me.
So I came back not only to confess my change of heart and actions, but give them a plug. I just got my mini-order and it is better than I had expected.  :yup
