I definitely think you need to account for Mom somehow. No, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on it, but I definitely think it needs mentioning so your readers don't wonder.

Maybe your MC doesn't really even know. Perhaps by filtering it through what Dad would tell him, it will add that emotional distance so it's not too sad for your humourous story? "Dad says Mom went to live the angels. For a long time I thought he was talking about the baseball team. It wasn't till later I realized he meant in heaven."

Something like that, anyway. ;)

you know, I think it is coming out in his personality anyway. There is a scene at his best friend's house with his friend's parents and sister where I find him expressing a bit of envy over his friend's family.

I almost wonder if she could be traveling. Maybe mama's in the army or something? Maybe they're used to mama being gone for long stretches - so it isn't sad, it's normal, and not really heavy? Just a thought.

Robin, good idea about having Mom travelling for long periods of time. Maybe she's an agent or scout or something? Heck, maybe she's a bestselling author. :hahaha
