Single parents in MG

I had briefly considered that, Carole, but I don't think it works well with the existing story line.
what if mom was in jail? :jail but for something like, say, radical activism? so maybe no one was hurt, but there was destruction of property or something? or some other type of non-violent crime, like a cat burglar or art thief? something that could be made into something funny.
but that might open up a whole can of worms...

In my three Supernatural Rubber Chicken chapter books, the kids live with their mother and the father is never mentioned. No one every seemed to have a problem with that. In my eight Zeke Meeks chapter books, every book mentions that the dad is a soldier who's away on a secret mission. In one of the eight books, the dad comes back. But in the other seven, he's gone. (I was raised by a single mother, so my characters tend to follow suit.)

I agree with those who suggested that you know what's up with mom, whether the m.c. mentions her or not. The thing is, it's possible that when you work out the mom's backstory, the m.c. will naturally tell you whether or not he is going to mention mom.
