Is it August yet?!

Okay, May might be really early to start the 2012 Summer Conference thread but I know I'm not the only one who is already excited. Who's going? Any intensives? I'll be there!

(Mods--this is last year's thread. Should I just start a new one?)

I split it off and renamed it for this year. It will make it much better for people planning to attend in 2012 -- like me!

I was gonna skip it this year for financial reasons (I took a new job that involved a pretty big pay cut), but then I discovered that my editor's giving a keynote and realized I'd be giving up the only debut-year SCBWILA conference I'll ever get to attend, so I'm going. :) Woohoo!

I was on the fence, too, but I'm going. No better place to be to celebrate the release of book 3 than with the people who've been on this long journey with me! I say cupcakes and sparkles all around!

I'll be there (my first SCBWI-LA conference!) for the Golden Kite Award Luncheon on Sunday, and I'm also teaching a workshop on picture books called "The Magical Unexpected." Can't wait!

I wish I could attend, but I can't afford it right now (haven't even gotten my SCBWI membership yet). I attended the SCBWI conference in Burnaby, and that was well worth the money. Much smaller than the one in LA. We had a total of six illustrators there plus the instructor. For me it's not just the money, though, it's being away from my baby (16 months) for three days. It might be easier next year, so I'll see what happens. I know you'll all have a blast (because I did at mine)!

Thanks, Verla. Are you selling a book this year?

Mike, so glad you have decided to come. It is a big commitment but what a wonderful once in a lifetime opportunity to be there on your debut year!

Yay, Joy, Jodi and Kate--see you there!

Dani we will miss you but yes it is a long time away from the little one this year. Another time!

I hope we plan a kidlit drinks night!

Just wanted to remind everyone that the deadline to submit a manuscript for consultation, or to sign up for a portfolio consultation, is next Tuesday, June 5th. Who's signing up this year?

Me too, Christine. I'm going to more kidlit events this year than I have in my entire life up until now, but I would have been very sad to miss out on SCBWILA this year - it's definitely the right decision for me. Hope to see you there!

Does anyone want to meet for a drink in the lobby bar on Thursday night? I love the atmosphere there the night before the conference starts.

Sadly, I won't get there until Friday morning, but I imagine the energy must be electric Thursday night!

I just HAD to bump up this thread because it's coming soon!  And my babysitter just confirmed for the Friday.

I only wish Henry Winkler (AKA Fonzie from Happy Days) was speaking again.  His personal story and encouragement to writers was amazing last year.  Plus he was SO FUNNY!

I live in LA and I almost always go, but this year I'm in all-writing, all the time mode with a revision and the conference might not happen for me.  As for a meet-up !!!! I can actually see the venue hotel from my house, and shooting over for a meet-up could take the sting out of not being there for the rest of it.  What time Thursday are you guys planning to get together?

Carol! I didn't realize you would be here. Yay!

Okay - so there's three of us. I say we just pick a time of 7:00 and spread the word. In the lobby bar?

That sounds perfect, Tracy. 7pm, Thursday, August 2nd at the bar at the Century Plaza.

Should we bring a certain book or something to put on the table to help people identify the group? I think we did that last year.

7:00 sound good as long as I can get a bite to eat in the lobby. I should be arriving around 6:30ish. So glad you'll be there Tracy! Who has a book they can put out? One of yours, Verla?

Is anyone arriving at LAX around 5:30 pm Thursday who would like to share a taxi? With 3 or 4 people it should be the same or cheaper than the shuttle -- and faster.
