I've been madly reading school visit threads here on the BBs. I think I have everything down. An intro, some fun facts, reading the story, and follow up with questions. I have little stick-puppets to color that go home with the kids.

Any words of wisdom will be appreciated! I'm super nervous about the technology aspect, as we're going to project the iPad story book onto a screen, although I have the old-fashioned back-up plan of just holding the iPad like a book if I have to.

Fingers crossed on that!  :goldstar

Looks like you're off to a great start.

I like to build in lots of humor and audience participation. This goes over big with little ones.

Good luck!

Oh texasgirl, have a blast! K'ers are the best audiences. They'll hang on every word, won't judge, they might pick their nose for you and ask totally off topic questions. You'll love it!
Go early and get the tech stuff right, if there's a problem just adapt with smiles. Tech problems happen. Nothing to sweat over.
Let us know how it goes. I think you'll love it!

yeah, what tammi said. :)

Hi TexasGirl.

I agree with Tammi.  I haven't done it from the author side, but as a teacher, my advice is to make them laugh and keep them involved.  Everyone's having a good time when they're smiling.  :)

Oh, and use their names if you can- maybe ask for nametags or if they're at their tables/desks, check their name when you respond to them.  Or just ask their names when you call on them.  It makes them feel special and kids always pay attention when they hear someone say their name!  (You could even ask the teacher if there's anyone in particular she'd like you to call on.)

Good luck!

I love doing kindergarten.  They are great singers!  The hardest part is the off-topic questions.

and if one does the pee pee dance, just deflect to the teacher. Chances are they will go to the bathroom before you present, but just sayin' ...it happens, a lot!

TexasGirl,
Just keep focused on the kiddos. They are your audience and they will love you. (They don't bite. A lot of them don't have front teeth. :)) Trust me. Don't try to impress the the adults. If you hook the kids and engage them it will flow and you'll love doing it. These kids are going to love your dust bunnies! I'm excited for you.

.

So true! I teach this age group as well. You'll be terrific, I'm sure. Take a deep breath, and enjoy! You've gotten some great advice here. I know somebody mentioned the fact that kids will often get off-topic during discussions. That happens alot with my kiddos, but it tends to lead to some interesting discussions.  :)  Be prepared for lots of smiles & laughs!  Once you get the first visit under your belt, the other 9 will be a piece of cake. ;). Good luck & let us know how it goes!

That's a lot of 5-yr-olds! But those stick puppets are adorable, and the kids will have a blast.

I once heard a pb author say that the question he got the most was "Where did you get your shoes?" He realized it was because kindergartners are always sitting on the floor, right on eye level with an author's shoes! So enjoy the randomness of kindergarten and have fun.

Ohmigosh!! Tex, you are one brave woman! Last month, I did eight visits in two days for middle schoolers--and I was a giant nervous wreck before the first one. After that, they were a breeze. :werd (I do a lot of presentations--but my audience is usually adults--librarians/teachers/booksellers or other authors. Kids are *way* outside my comfort zone!)

My advice, based on my recent experience: Relax, SLOW DOWN, and have fun. You know your material, the kids will enjoy the break in their day, so it's all good.

On a more practical level, make sure the teachers know that you are there to give your presentation, NOT do the teacher's job of providing classroom support and child-wrangling! At the book festival where I spoke, the teachers were entirely hands off. It was really frustrating when the kids would get over-excited, and the teachers didn't step in to get them to settle down.

(Note, I realize that teachers are highly-trained, compassionate professionals and far, far more than babysitters--but I have NO classroom experience and would expect that someone who works with these kids daily would be able to get them back on task a lot more efficiently than the guest presenter.)

I love the little people! A few specifics...

-Open ended questions eat up a tremendous amount of time. So don't ask, "Who has a pet?" unless you're feeling the need to hear every story about everyone's pet and who wants a pet and whose Grandma has a pet and whose pet died and the name of every pet...   On the other hand, if you need to eat up 15 minutes, go for it!

-Make sure you and the teacher are on the same page about who's in charge of bathroom questions, Kleenexes, boo-boos that need inspecting, unruliness and handing out the crayons. Almost all of the time, if you ask, they'll be just as happy to know what you'd like them to do.

-Kindergarteners love to be consulted like experts. (Don't we all.) Feel free to ask how they would change the ending or what they would have happen in the next book. But have a thick skin. They have no issues with noting that your shoes are ugly and you should wear a different pair next time, irregardless of whether or not that's the question you asked.

-They're gonna wiggle anyway so if you can add a gesture or something physical (clapping, a noise, snapping, etc.) with your read-along it can be helpful.

-Have fun. I'm sure you'll  :guitar:

I love the littlies, too. Wonderful and exhausting! I project my story too, if I have a group too large to just read to, story-chair-style, and it's always worked fine. One of the hardest things for me to learn was that I can't call on every hand that goes up. That gets out of control really quickly. Unless I'm calling for responses, I've learned to be firm and say "Hands down now". Of course, you do have to watch for that, "I need the toilet" expression...

I hope you have a ball (and them too!). Let us know how it goes.

Keep control, keep it moving:) I found school visits nerve wracking (Imagine, a grown woman made nervous as heck by a group of 5 year olds, haha) and just not my thing, so only can handle doing a couple a year, but have a few suggestions.
No matter what, keep it moving. Other wise you'll be listening to THEIR stories till the 45 minutes is up. You mention dog, and suddenly every hand is up, to tell you they have a dog too, it's name is "Charlie"/ "Ben" /"Fluffy", it's black, it's brown, it's green, and it eats poop (and every one laughs in the group) etc...Just say, that's nice and move on, quick!:) The teachers are almost always GREAT and they work on the sidelines, to control the "mob mentalitly":)
Ask that the teachers make sure the children are familiar with your book. After they read it to the class, the teacher might also ask the kids to do their own drawing of one of the books characters. They then have something to show and even give to you when you visit (they love doing that)
I'm not sure if your the Illustrator? They LOVE if you draw for them, so if you are, ask the school supply and easel and pad of paper. I really hope the projector works for you because the iPad screen will not be large enough for the group to see the pictures and they will knock each other down trying to get close enough to see.
The stick puppets are great, they will LOVE them!
With grade 1, the questions are truly QUESTIONS. With the little guys, "do you have a question" seems to most often result in them telling you about something in their lives, related or not, to the book:) The only true question I get asked at least once during every visit, from every grade, is...
"how much money do you make"?

"Penelope and the Humongous Burp"
"Penelope and the Monsters"
"Penelope and the Preposterous Birthday Party"

Thinking of you this morning.  :)
It's late enough in the year so these tykes are almost first graders and they probably won't confuse the term author with Arthur, but just in case, be prepared for one of them to say, "I wanted you to read the Arthur books! Wah, wah! Don't take it personally, hah!
There's a big difference in kinders from the beginning of the year to the end of year. These kids are a little more mature now. At year's end all kids get a little extra wiggly though. In due time, you might think of a little ditty related to your book that you could use, (maybe by wiggling your hands by your head as bunny ears as you say the ditty) that will alert them to "listen", especially if you have a very youngish group or like I said at the beginning of kindergarten. Closer to first grade, they won't like that as much, but you'll get the feel of it.  :bunnyrun

Well, I did two Kinder classes today.

The first one went pretty perfectly--kids stayed mostly on topic (I mentioned that my daughter Elizabeth was the one who decided the dust bunnies should be secret agents and suddenly everyone who ever knew someone named Elizabeth was jumping up and down. You BBers knew!!!!)

I talked in front of them at first but for the reading I had to move. Because I was projecting and the cord to the projector was BEHIND the kids, they kept turning around to watch me talk.

So for the second one we set up two iPads, one on the projector in autoplay, and one up front with me to read from. DISASTER! The one projecting kept timing out to black and we couldn't really stop to change the settings mid stream. I was super duper rattled although the librarian, who started manning the auto play iPad to keep it "awake" told me I looked cool as a cucumber and read the story with the same intensity. Inside I was going CRAZY!!!! Which is silly. It's just six-year-olds. But they do say what they think!

The teachers loved the puppets and planned to use them during free time for coloring and acting out the story again. They were very complimentary of my handling of the kids and their wiggly-ness and random questions and liked that the story was about how important it was to go outside and play.

The kid who got picked to be the "hero" in each story (the app changes the skin/hair/gender/name of the main character to match the reader) was thrilled.

So WHEW!!! Now to figure out the settings on this iPad (I just got it YESTERDAY--the producer got me one since I had so many visits scheduled.) Tomorrow will go better!

Yay, Tex!!

Oops--did we forget to mention it helps to be FLEXIBLE?! :dr  (At the book festival last month, I totally scrapped my entire prepped presentation after the first session, b/c it turns out that 8th graders are not as interested in a lecture on the history of fairy tales as librarians are. Go figure! :dr)

The next 8 will be great!!
