I have taken the 2012 Mentor List, turned it into an MS Word file and organized it by publishing house and agency. I have found in the past that this is a much more logical way to research the people that are going to be there. If anyone would like the file, PM me and I will send it to you!

I'm traveling from Cleveland. In my search for airfares, I found a rock-bottom rate from the Pittsburgh airport to Newark.
Thought you might want to check it out, if it's still available.
So far, the airfares from CLE are sky-high!

Thanks, Stephanie for the heads up on airfare. I actually don't mind the drive. I drove by myself last year to the Rutgers conference and have gone the last two years to the NJ SCBWI conference with friends. It's a pretty easy drive. If you're coming through Pittsburgh, you're welcome to carpool with us!

Question: I've completely revised the first chapter of my MG since submitting my Rutgers application. What I have now is much stronger.
Will my mentor have time to review the revised version, or should I see if I can submit this ahead of time?

I had the same issue last year when I went with my YA fantasy novel. Your session with your mentor can be spent however you'd like; they only receive your work the morning of the conference so theyve only had a brief hour or less to read your original submission anyway. So my mentor read my newly revised version and commented on it in the moment, which worked for us. It's best to come prepared with lots of questions and discussion points for that meeting. If you have other WIP's you can bring a synopsis or excerpt from that as well. I hope that answers your question.

Maybe veterans of the conference have a different impression so please correct me if I'm incorrect- but I think the mentors find out their mentees the morning of the conference, just as we do; while we are listening to the first talk- the "success story" - go Tara!- the mentors are receiving their assignment which includes our submitted excerpt. They read it in a large room en masse. I found this to be a bit disappointing and I hope I'm wrong-

Hi Stephanie, I agree with what Lisa said. Last year I had also totally revised my YA ms. My mentor was awesome and read the revised ms during our one-on-one session and gave suggestions on both the old and the current ms which was super helpful. Lisa is right. The mentors don't receive your work until that morning, but I don't believe you can hand in a revised piece. Otherwise, everyone would be doing this and things wouldn't run as smoothly.

Hi Tara!

I'm planning to call the hotel tomorrow (Tues) and see what I can set up. Many of us are staying at the Hilton in East Brunswick, so I thought I'd keep things simple and make reservations at the hotel's restaurant. (I'm still open to suggestions though! Especially if anyone knows the area well.)

Last year, the restaurant let us have a semi-private room for the entire evening, so people just showed up whenever they got into town. Most of us ordered dinner, and the wait staff didn't seem to mind taking orders as new people arrived.

I thought I'd try and reserve the space starting around 6:30pm for the entire evening. (I think the restaurant closes at 10pm.)

What do you think?
