The research I've seen (a small study) said that there was no difference in how students learned when printed books were compared to static e-books, and the children enjoyed the e-books more. The problem came when the books were interactive -- kids spent more time trying to figure out what moved than focusing on the content.

I think the generation that started on paper and moved to ebooks is going to be VERY different from this generation who are starting on SmartPhones and iPads. There is famous video footage of toddlers tossing magazines aside because they do the finger pulls and swipes on the paper and they don't change. Like it or not, it's the way the world is going to move. In our school district, the Kindergartens, 8th grades, and high school seniors are all getting iPads checked out to them instead of textbooks.
