Rotten Tomatoes-style site for books
(1/1)
Whizbee:
Like many of you, I've had the pros and many cons of Goodreads on my mind lately--I love seeing what other people have to say about books I'm reading, but in the end I just find so many of the reviews to be less than thoughtful. But it's a pain to hunt down professional reviews from different sources. So now I'm wondering--does anyone know of a site that aggregates professional reviews of books, much like Rotten Tomatoes does for movies?
I do love when Publishers Weekly does a post on the "stars so far," showing how many starred reviews different books have received. But it'd be great to find something more comprehensive. Not all of the books I like to read are going to be starred. And I want to see lots of reviews for a book. I want to hear a whole bunch of different opinions like I see on Goodreads (I just want those opinions to be more thoughtful).
Anyway, if you know of something like that, great! I guess until then I'll just be doing lots of googling.

I'm answering my own question in case anyone else is curious. I think this topic was brought up elsewhere? Anyway, I'm really looking forward to a new site called Bookish, which will include "book reviews, book excerpts, suggestions on books to buy, and news about authors." It's supposed to be the IMDB for books, which sounds perfect. Especially in light of the cloud of negativity hanging over certain other book review sites lately. :lightning:
The site is supposed to be up by Labor Day. Here's an article about it:

Thanks for the link -- hopefully, it'll be more positive than GR has been!
Joni:
I was going to say "Amazon," but obviously those are mostly amateur reviews. (Though I've never seen anything on it half as bad as on GR. They must moderate more.)
And then I thought, actually, for the average book, there probably aren't enough pro reviews still being done to bother aggregating them. Virtually every newspaper has a movie review column. Not remotely true for books any more.
Another version of Bookish in the works is the Bookigee venture, WriterCube. http://signup.writercube.com/?lrRef=iP5Kl. It's still in beta. (Or maybe alpha-and-a-half.)

What a great idea! Thanks for the link.
