Highlights 2012 contest

stephwc:
Is there really not a thread for this yet?  I couldn't find one. The theme for 2012 is: A funny story inspired by an unusual newspaper headline.

I'm curious where people found their unusual newspaper headlines.  Your local paper? Online?  Finding an unusual headline that's kid-friendly is trickier than I thought. I did find one online though.  My draft is finally down to 800 words and I sub it to my critique group again this week.

How's everyone doing with this year's theme?

Steph

Eric Hammond:
Thanks for pointing this out Steph.

And you are right, it is tough!

jojocookie:
I had a story written a year ago that I was planning on sending in.   Do you think it would not qualify for the contest because the newspaper story is 50 years old?  I was hoping to use the money for The Institute of Children's Literature.  What do you think?

Stacy:
I was thinking of making up an unusual headline. Do you think it has to be a real headline?

cindoh:
Jojo, I think a headline from 50 years ago would be terrific! The rules don't specify it has to be a modern-day headline, and given that it can take years and years for Highlights to print a story, stories that are extremely topical can be a problem.

Stacy, I don't know about it not being a real headline... I interpreted the rules to mean a real headline but it doesn't actually say that so maybe you'd be okay.
