From the WIP Grant Application:

"PROCEDURES
1) Prepare 7 clearly reproduced copies of:
a) A completed Grant Application Form.
b) A writing sample, not to exceed 2,500 words, from the work for which the grant will be used.
c) A synopsis of that work, not to exceed 750 words.
2) Collate the material in the order given above and securely staple it into 7 separate sets.
3) Your name, as listed by the SCBWI, should be the one used on the Application Form and should appear on the first page of both your manuscript and synopsis. (We need to be able to verify your membership, so be sure you list the name that appears on your membership card. You can double check how we have you listed by emailing membership@scbwi.org.)
4) The application may be single-spaced, but all other material must be typed double-spaced with
adequate margins, using a type face and point size that is easily read.
5) Each set of material may total no more than 15 pages, including the Application Form."

I hope that didn't come across as snarky or anything.  I was kind of confused, too, so I looked it up.  I recently entered another contest that was anonymous, so I couldn't remember which directions were for which contest - lol.

I was planning on leaving my header, too.  I hope that's okay, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't be....

No!  Not at all!  I meant it at face value.  Thank you!!!  I feel better about it now myself.  I start doubting what I'm doing and I need to stop that.

Dumb question alert. . .

How do you type into the grant application form???

It's not a dumb question at all.  I had trouble at first, and had to figure out how to get it to work.  Make sure you have the most updated version of Adobe.  When I first opened the file, I thought I'd have to copy and paste it into Word, but updating Adobe did the trick and all I had to do was click inside a box and start typing.

Let us know if it works!

Still not working for me for some reason.  And I successfully downloaded Adobe Reader 9.3.  Very frustrating.  Not sure what to do now.  Can anyone offer up a Plan B?

I hand wrote mine. Somewhere in the directions it says you can do that.

ETA: From the directions: APPEARANCE Make your submission a clean, legible, professional package. Information on the Application Form should be printed by hand, typed, or word processed devoid of cross-outs and insertions.

Can you try another browser?  I used Internet Explorer.

If that doesn't work, you can try to copy and paste it into Word so you can type inside the boxes (that's how I've filled it out in the past).  But I hope using another browser does the trick!

I had this trouble too.  I also couldn't get it to work in Word all that well, so I used the screenshot tool in Adobe and copied the page, then I pasted it onto a Powerpoint slide that I had resized to 8.5x11.  I inserted text boxes from my responses and printed out the full slide to turn in.  It worked great!

hope this helps

So, I would just like to interpose here and say that I hand wrote my grant application page last year, and I ended up with a Letter of Commendation for the Barbara Karlin grant.  So perhaps all this computer angst is not necessary.  I know that it bothers some people a lot of if they can't type up the application form, but if you are not that kind of person, just print it out and fill it in neatly with your favorite black or blue pen (and please don't fret about if a black pen is better than a blue one).

Chicken scratch it is. . . I just don't have the time or determination to make it work.  Maybe I'll get extra points for good penmanship!   :smile

And I'll add that my synopsis was two full pages and I ended up with runner-up grant, so I don't think you necessarily need to fret about it going over.

wow! Cramming all week. Finally got my application done and printed (at Staples--I had printer issues) and mailed. What a lot of work. But the great thing about entering is that it forces you to refine and refine and refine until you have a synopsis that works (from opening conflict to an ending that pays off) and a first chapter that sets the tone and introduces a great character with a conflict. It was such hard work, but win or lose I'm so happy I did it. Now I'm really excited to finish writing this book.

I'm assuming they've contacted the winners or will be contacting them soon since this is September.  Congrats to the winners, runner ups, and honorable mentions!  (I know I'm listing my congrats early.)   :flowers2

I'll have to look through some old threads to check, but I believe they sometimes notify winners in mid to late September.  Fingers and toes crossed that the winner's list is full of Blueboarders! :goodluck

Still holding my breath.  Turned blue about 3 weeks ago.  Now I'm a nice shade of purple, edging towards green.   :feelbad  ((sigh))  Good luck, everyone!  :goodluck

I checked SCBWI's web page under "Previous News" and the Work in Progress winners were announced last year on September 15.  I couldn't find out when winners were announced in '08 or '07 to see if the dates fluctuate much.

Anyway, just thought I'd share the info!   :typing

I met one of last year's winners at the summer conference, and she said they told her around September 1st. Hopefully they're running later this year!

For those of you who've applied before, do they ever send out mass emails to all the applicants, saying thanks-for-entering-here's-who-won, or are the winners just posted on their website?

I applied in 2008 and I don't remember receiving an email...

No, you don't hear anything at all.  The winners, runners-up, and letter of merit recipieints are the only ones who are specifically contacted.

I definitely will, Stephanie! My critique partner is utterly over the moon right now, and the rest of us in the critique group are badgering her to send along the full manuscript once she's finished. I can't wait to read it!

Hi all!  I received a call yesterday that I was a runner up!!  I am assuming the rest of the winners were called yesterday, too.  I'm still floating on cloud 9!
