The Nicholls Fellowship: FYI

This is a well respected screenwriting competition sponsored by the AMPAS (same people that do the Academy awards), and run by a man named Greg Beal. To qualify you cannot have sold a screenplay previously. A reader reads your script and it either gets passed on moved up the line. If kept, another couple of readers get it, and on and on. Each year ten finalist are picked and flown to Hollywood for a lunch/schmooze fest. Then, out of the 10 finalists, 5 fellowships are awarded, for 30K each.

EVERYONE in Hollywood respects this competition. The odds are stacked against you, of course, but the payoff can be huge. This will get you into Hollywood. Get you an agent. Give you an edge to sell something.

THE UPSIDE: Several years back I made it to the quarterfinals of the Nicholls (that year the quarterfinalists were the top 300 out of the 6,044 entries). I got immediate acceptances from film schools I didn't apply for (and couldn't afford). And later, when I inadvertantly met a Hollywood agent at a writer's conference, she asked me to send her my script based on the Nicholls alone. (she then left her agency and is now an author -- go figure).

THE DOWNSIDE: Though I got fairly far, the competition offers no feedback -- I'm still at a loss as to what propelled my script forward in the competition, or what part of it didn't allow it to go further. ;D
