Impressive pace, Elissacruz. I'm revising, too--my beta reader suggested I insert a plot. Silly man.

Thanks Lynne for that link and suggestions. I'm going to definitely try that. As of now, I do some revisions, see dust on a table and distract myself by dusting it, which leads me to remember that I have an icecream sandwich saved in the freezer, which leads me to realize that I forgot to pay a bill, which lead me to ... see. Doing it again!  :)

Haha! Yes, that sounds just like me!

Too funny!

Good luck on your revision plan Elissa. You can do it. I have a similar goal to get my WIP to agent man by the end of September. I'm receiving and still awaiting feedback from my critique group. Their ideas are great so far and I'm anxious to dive back in!

I'm currently wrapping up agent-recommended rewrites on a 40k MG contemporary. I would love to do a manuscript exchange with anyone at a similar stage of a project. A perfect match would involve same genre and a project that is either represented or close to being signed. I like to do thorough readings with what I hope are thoughtful big picture insights as well as specific edits and comments at the sentence level.

I'll throw something similar up on the manuscript exchange forum, but my first choice would be someone really into the middle grade genre.

Hi LTMadison, I'm in revisions for a 30K MG novel that is set in the 1970's. It's based on a true account and I have a request from an agent for the full. I don't want to send it out until I know that it's in the best shape possible. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm at the same place as you are. I am not represented and not even sure if I'm close to being signed. I wish you the best in your search for a swap, but if you would still like for me to take a look, I'd be happy to do so. Just PM me. Take care.

LTMadison's post made me curious about which genres all you MG Writers write.

Me: I mostly write contemporary, generally quiet, character-driven stories.

My current WIP is contemporary, somewhat humorous, character-driven, and more on the quiet side.  I have an historical MG on the back burner as well.

Great quesion, jodyjl! I will be interested in the responses!

I write MG boy books with historical settings or tie-ins. I'm not trying to do historicals, it's just what comes out.   :typing

It's a wrap on my new MG. Well, it's a wrap for the first really solid draft. Now my readers have to shred, hack, scream at me for my bad habits so I can pull together the real wrapped up version. Wish me luck.

I write upper MG, character driven, cozy mysteries - or I guess I should say mystery, because this is my first one.

Well, I completely fell off the horse for my ride through this revision.  I had to take a week off for another project (not writing-related).  I am just now getting back in the saddle.  It's going to be tough to finish this by the end of the month, so the new goal is to finish by the end of October.  Good thing this book isn't under contract or I'd be in big trouble!

FYI, it's upper-MG contemporary coming-of-age tale with a historical/timeless feel, totally character-driven, quiet, and maybe too quiet, since the girl MC has a lot of quiet strength about her.  My other manuscript currently on sub is a funny mystery with a boy MC, which is on the border between chapter book and MG.  Agent is shopping it as a chapter book.

Which is just a long-winded way of saying I write all over the spectrum. :yup Haven't decided if that is a good thing or not, though.

Elissa, it's a totally good thing! You're versatile! Accomplished in many areas! Skilled across the board! Your readership could be legendary! Or...something.

This is my first MG, so I can't say it's all I write, but it's an upper MG mystery with a girl MC. My other bubbling ideas seem more contemporary, though. So who knows?

E, I hear you on revisions. I have done squat lately. Sigh. I feel especially bad about it, because so many people have given me great crits and helped resolve some sticky points. I should be sailing! But, no.  :groan

I also write humorous MG novels.  Right now I'm revising a noir mystery, but I also have a younger MG book involving monsters at some stage of development, which varies from 'this could work' to 'can anything save this' depending on the day.

Add me to the list of those who struggle with plotting.  You might say I plod through the plot.

I just yanked a whole chapter out of the middle of my book and it felt good. What I think is essential, isn't always.

Pons, yay for you! That's difficult to do, but it can free up the story to untold possibilities! I just tore up my entire MG and it's so much better. The whole thing just fell into place.

I wish you the best with all of your revisions! :yay

Hurray for you. Yanking out a chunk is always such a major choice to make. What I've found is that the "yanked" portion might not be good in one WIP, but has some good stuff that I can use elsewhere. No writing is wasted, even if you just chalk it up to practice--Practice is good. :-)

You're right. It could work in another book, but right now it's just slowing things down. I loved it when I wrote it, but now I wonder what else I should yank.

When a book is being edited, what do editors want more: things eliminated, added, or clarified? it probably varies, but does anyone have an answer?

I've got two MG manuscripts with an agent, one of which has been revised with the help of some perceptive beta readers, the second through the guidance of the agent. One of the great benefits of having experienced, independent readers is their noting of flagging narrative drive, unnecessary backstory, and extra-topical chapters. One litmus test is to ask whether the passage in question ups the tension or gets the story closer to its climax. If the chapter can be eliminated without throwing the narrative into disarray, it probably should go. The agent edits I received were focused on upping the stakes and layering in more levels of tension.

I've just begun Printz award winner An Na's Wait for Me, and I was immediately struck by the layers of complication she quickly drops on her MC, Nina. She has an overbearing mother, an ailing father, a young and vulnerable sister with a hearing disability who relies on her, an ex-boyfriend whose advances she distains even as he holds enormous leverage over her, a complex network of lies about her grades and high school achievements, and a scheme which involves embezzling from her family's drycleaning business for reasons which are suggested to be vital, but remain a mystery to the reader. And the love interest hasn't even been introduced yet!

This is a wonderful example of the kind of layering the agent was requesting be added to my character's central dilemma.

I've found they mostly want clarification. Usually, I have to add a few "he saids" or "she thoughts."

I am at the point in my MG mystery where I had better come up with some way for my MC to start solving the mystery of it will sink into nothing and ...

I am definitely plodding.  I know the ending of the book, I know how I want to get the MC there, but I can't seem to find the words to get her from where I have her now to where she needs to be to solve the case.  > slapping myself on the forehead gently<

Ditto on the sparkles - also some virtual chocolate.

As another would-be mystery writer, I feel your pain.  It's easy for me to read msyteries and see the flaws, but for my own writing?  Not so much.

I could use some fresh eyes on my new MG. And I'm up for exchanging if you still need that. You might want to check out my work a bit to see if you think we're a match. My first MG novel, Alligators Overhead just came out this summer. You can reach me at cleemckenziebooksATcomcastDOTnet.

You know the old advise "read your work out loud" Well I started doing that and whoopsie, I found some humdinger mistakes.  Was all set to write one night when my brother called, he talked over 75 minutes.  Normal for him.  Does not help the writing.   :phone
