IRC Information

This IRC information is separated into three sections. The first is for those who have IBM's. The second is for Mac people. The third is for everybody.

FOR IBM PEOPLE:

1. If you don't have an IRC client, go to <http://www.mirc.co.uk> and download a copy of mIRC -- it's a very easy to use windows program.

2. The software comes with a list of IRC servers that you can connect to. Click "ADD" and create a name for this new connection, maybe "WRITER'S CHAT". Then, in the "IRC SERVER" section, type new<irc.fractured.net > to connect to the Kidlit Chat room. (Do NOT type in the <brackets> when typing the IRC SERVER address.) The "PORTS" box should have the number 7000 in it. Click OK

3. Now, with WRITER'S CHAT highlighted in the IRC Servers list, click CONNECT (you must be online first)

4. You'll be connected to the correct server. Now a list of channels on that server will pop up. Select or type in #Kidlit, (with a capital K) click JOIN and you're in!

If you are having problems getting connected, try these instructions:

To get on Server with IBM's:

You need to click on 'File' pull down menu. Then select setup. A box will appear, titled mIRC Setup.

Then look in the first 'pull down field' (where you can type something in) and click on the down arrow. Look for the server name. If you can find it, then select it. If you can't find it, then you will need to create it.

To create it, click on the button that says 'Add' and another pop-up window will appear.

In the description field you can put whatever you like, but in the 'IRC server' field, you need to type new<irc.fractured.net>

Put 7000 in the Port field, then click okay, then click connect. You should now be on the server.

FOR MAC PEOPLE:

The IRC server I'm using is at <http://www.ircle.com> This has been very reliable for me. This is shareware, so you can download it and try it out for free, then if you like it, the cost is just $15. I have discovered that it allows me to change the colors of my messages and also the "enter" box at the bottom of the screen can be made larger and scrolls so that you can see all of your message - even when it's a long one.

You will not need to open Netscape or whatever browser you are currently using to be able to connect to the chat room. Just open your modem channel using MacTCP or FreePPP (whichever your Mac uses) then click on the IrcleUS icon. In the pull-down menu, open startup -- it may be in the preferences file....I can't quite remember. And I think I'm telling you the proper names for these things! The name of the IRC Server will need to be typed in. (Do NOT type the <brackets> when typing the IRC Server name.) It is new <irc.fractured.net > for the Kidlit chat room. The port should be set to 7000. Close the preferences, Open the Channel and then go to "Join." (It's in another of the pull-down menus.) When you get the connect screen, type in #Kidlit (with a capital K) and press return. Presto! You will be in. The next time you want to connect, all you will have to do is click on the IrcleUS icon, open the channel and join #Kidlit.

FOR EVERYONE:

This chat room is for writers and illustrators of children's literature. In this room, we share ideas, brainstorm stories, critique each other's work, celebrate our successes and commiserate with each other's rejections. We help each other over the dry spells and disappointments, too. Who else, but another writer, would understand the joys of receiving a rejection note with a single word, "Sorry," written on it!
