What do you think of when you think of an Author Visit? Dry, dull facts? Squirming, whispering kids? Not with Verla Kay! A dynamic, active presentation with lots of excitement and fun is what you will get when you invite Verla to come and share herself with your students.
Verla has worked extensively with children, as a paid Teacher's Aide in the classroom, as Den Leader and Cubmaster of Cub Scouts, as a Sunday School Teacher and as a Licensed Daycare Provider. She is a volunteer at her local library for Story Hour and loves working with children of all ages.
Verla gives a dynamic, exciting presentation, allowing children a look behind the scenes of a working author. How a book is conceived and written, what happens inside publishing houses and how to get started as an author are just some of the things that Verla will share with your students. Verla has successfully given presentations to both individual classes and full assemblies for grades K-6.

If a topic you particularly want covered is not listed, just ASK. Verla is very willing to address the specific needs of YOUR school or group.
When you book an Author Visit with Verla Kay, you will receive a pre-prepared packet of copy-ready pages that you may use in your classroom after her presentation. This will include such items as:
- Old fashioned recipes suitable for classroom use for Johnny Cakes (old-time pancakes) and Leather Britches (dried, cooked green beans,)
- Authentic Old-Time Games that children can play outdoors
- Bookmark souvenirs of Verla's visit to your school
- Fun Facts about the historic times when her books take place
- "Story Cube" master sheets to help children generate their own story ideas
- Color, cut & paste pages with activities correlating to Verla's books
BONUS! Individual class visits may also include a gold-panning demonstration and it can be arranged for a gold pan, gold-bearing ore and other necessary supplies to be left with the class so that the children can practice panning for gold on their own after Verla's visit. (Not available if air transportation is the only available method of reaching your area unless special arrangements for 5 gallons of water in a very large, clear plastic tub are made ahead of time.)
HONORARIUM: $500 - $950
